About using music in your movie

The law

U.S. copyright law says any creative work is the sole property of the creator and is automatically protected by federal law at the time of creation. Such work may not be reproduced by others without permission from the creator or the person they have transferred copyright ownership to (a record label, for example). (Learn more...)

How your movie is affected

If you follow the law then you may not use any music in your movie for which you do not have documented permission from the copyright holder or for which you are the creator/copyright holder.

The decision as to whether or not to follow the law is up to you and your team. Should you choose to use protected music in your movie without the copyright holder's permission, liability rests entirely upon your team and not the iMovieFest crew. However, this will severely limit what we can do with your movie.

The iMovieFest crew has chosen to follow U.S. copyright law. This means that we will not be able to show your movie at Premiere Night, display it on the Web site or otherwise show it in any way if it contains protected music for which you can not provide documented permission from the copyright holder. Sad, but true.

Important reminder

If you do use copyrighted material in your movie we will not be able to show it at Premiere Night or put it on the Web unless you provide documentation of consent by the copyright holder.
